Is Your Private Information Safe on Social Media?

More than 12 million Americans were victims of identity fraud in the past year, according to a recent study. Twelve million. I was one of them. Against my better judgment, I curiously clicked on a questionable direct message from a friend, and like that, my Twitter account was phished. Luckily, I changed my passwords and implemented damage control before things got out of hand.

What I learned from that experience, and the growing cybersecurity problems gobbling up news headlines, is whether you're a multinational company or a middle school teacher, we all need to do a better job of protecting our private information. And often, social media is the tool used to compromise our data. Read more...More about Twitter, Social Media, Password Management, Phishing Scam, and Infographic

PS3 users report 4.45 update locks up systems, may be tied to large HDDs

Planning on turning on your PS3 for some The Last of Us action tonight? According to a thread on the PlayStation Support forums, if you're prompted to install the latest firmware update version 4.45 then you may want to hold off for now. A number of owners are reporting their systems locks up while booting, although the problem may only affect users with hard drives installed that are 500GBs or larger. According to the changelog, it was supposed to allow users to select whether or not they want an in-game notification when a trophy is earned. If it is tied to user-replaced hard drives, it does remind us of the time v3.41 resulted in a few corrupted PlayStation 3 drives. Check the thread for more details, if we hear more from Sony then we'll let you know when it's safe to press OK.

Comments

Via: @Wario64 (Twitter)

Source: PlayStation 3 Support Forum

Sony Bravia TVs glitch through the night in Australia

While thousands of Australians were glued to their TVs last night, cheering on the Socceroos, some fans were left wondering why their Sony Bravia TV was glitching. With Sony the official supporter of the Socceroos team, the timing of the glitch is a little more than ironic, coinciding with the Australia-Iraq soccer World Cup qualifier match last night.Four models (KDL-EX550, KDL-EX650, KDL-HX750 and KDL-HX850) are affected in New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland. The glitch starting mid afternoon on Tuesday, with Sony confirming the problem through a post on its support.According to Sony, the issue is due to corrupt free-to-air TV EPG data, which is updated by broadcasters periodically. The glitch causes the screen to freeze or the TV switching off automatically every 90 seconds.Sony issued two solutions, first at 3pm then at 4.45pm AEST, the latter simply asking customers to unplug their TV, wait for a minute, then turning it on again.Nine Network at fault? As the night went on however, customers posted on Twitter and technology forum Whirlpool that the solutions hadn't worked. Some Whirlpool users relied instead on their pay-TV input and simply unplugged their broadcast aerials.Sony updated its statement today, acknowledging that customers had still been experiencing problems overnight and that the corrupt EPG data may have been from the Nine Network. "Nine Network Australia engineers are believed to have identified the source of the corrupt EPG data, have stabilised the issue and are working through solutions to provide a permanent fix," the statement said.Sony said that if customers still experience problems, to again unplug their TV, then turn it back on after a minute, or to contact Sony's support team.

Giants' New Social Cafe Brings Twitter to Life

Physically going out to the ol' ballgame has always been an unmatched sporting experience. More recently, however, fans have flocked to online social platforms to talk trash, post thoughts and generally partake in the fun of spectator sports

Well, fandom's offline and online realms just got married at AT&T Park, home of MLB's San Francisco Giants

SEE ALSO: How the World Series Was Won on Twitter

The team unveiled its new "@Cafe" this week, distilling the team's online buzz in one physical location for supporters to visit just beyond the ballpark's centerfield wall

The Giants are billing the location as a sports marketing first. It's appropriate the step comes from one of the most digitally creative teams in the world. The team's innovative promotions and social-savvy audience have long led all the major leagues, culminating in the team besting a mid-campaign Barack Obama in Klout cred during its World Series run last fall.
Vine 1.1.3 update adds a share button

A new update has been released for the popular social video app Vine that adds a sharing button beneath posts in your feed, along with the standard bug fixes that come with every update. Sharing is a nice touch that the app has been sorely lacking since its launch. When you hit share, you're given a list of options: Twitter, Facebook or embed.

When you share your own videos, the link is sent directly to the feed of your choice with no option to insert a personal message. The Vine is simply shared with the text you attached to it. However, when you share a friend's Vine you're given the option of attaching your own text to the repost, so you can tag friends... or perhaps enemies.

You can find the Vine version 1.1.3 in the App Store right now.Vine 1.1.3 update adds a share button originally appeared on TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog on Tue, 18 Jun 2013 17:30:00 EST.
Google Fights Spying Gag Order, But Key Details Would Lack Even If Successful

As it promised it would, Google is fighting the government's gag order on releasing how many users are monitored by the National Security Agency. Unlike Facebook and Microsoft, Google and Twitter publicly rejected a government deal to disclose the total number of spying warrants for user data, which would include (but not detail) the number of requests coming from the controversial Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISA).

Google challenges FISA court on government data requests, asks for ability to release more details

Google and other companies have already made general calls for more transparency in the wake of the PRISM revelations, and it looks like Mountain View is now escalating those requests to a court challenge. As The Washington Post reports, Google is asking the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court for some additional leeway with the government requests for data that it's able to disclose, and it's citing the First Amendment to make its case.

In a statement provided to us (included in full after the break), a Google spokesperson says that the company is specifically asking the court to let it "publish aggregate numbers of national security requests, including FISA disclosures, separately," adding that "lumping national security requests together with criminal requests - as some companies have been permitted to do - would be a backward step for our users." That's in line with a statement Google made on Friday, which was echoed by Twitter, although there's no word yet on it or any other companies joining Google in the court challenge at this time.

Comments

Source: The Washington Post
